Phase 5: Working on the Requirements

GMAT

The GMAT Focus Edition โ€” structure, scoring, and whether your programme actually asks for it.

GMAT: what it is, and whether it applies to you at all

A business-school admissions test. If you are applying for a computer science Master's, you almost certainly do not need it.

First: is this even your test?

The GMAT is aimed at management and business programmes โ€” MBA, Management, Finance, Business Analytics. German Master's programmes in computer science and engineering ask for the GRE if they ask for anything at all. If your shortlist is technical, you can very likely skip this page entirely. Check each programme's admissions page rather than sitting an expensive test nobody asked for. The programme matcher's GMAT filter will hide programmes that require one if you say you don't have it.

The exam changed โ€” ignore older guides

The current exam is the GMAT Focus Edition, which replaced the previous GMAT. Older prep material describes an Analytical Writing Assessment, a separate Integrated Reasoning section, and a 200โ€“800 score scale. None of that applies any more. If a guide mentions an essay or a score out of 800, it is describing the retired test.

Structure

Section Questions Time
Quantitative Reasoning โ€” problem solving and numerical literacy 21 45 min
Verbal Reasoning โ€” reading comprehension and critical reasoning 23 45 min
Data Insights โ€” analysing and interpreting data in business scenarios 20 45 min
Total 64 2 h 15 min

One optional 10-minute break. You may take the three sections in any order.

The Question Review & Edit tool. You can go back and change answers within a section, which the old GMAT did not allow. In practice that means you should not burn time on a question you are stuck on โ€” flag it, move on, and return with whatever time is left.

Scoring

  • Each of the three sections is scored 60โ€“90.
  • The total score runs 205โ€“805.
  • Scores are valid for five years.

Because the scale changed with the Focus Edition, a Focus score is not directly comparable to an old GMAT score. Do not judge your target against a class profile published before the change without checking which scale it uses.

Registration

  1. Register through mba.com, GMAC's own site.
  2. Use the name exactly as it appears on the passport you will bring to the centre.
  3. Choose a test-centre appointment or the online, remote-proctored version. Test centres operate in Pakistan's major cities; confirm current locations and dates on mba.com when booking.
  4. Pay the fee. Widely quoted figures are around US$275 at a test centre and US$300 online. Treat those as indicative only โ€” they come from third-party sites, not GMAC's own fee page, and pricing varies by region. Confirm on mba.com before budgeting.

How to prepare

  • Use Focus Edition material. Anything covering AWA or Integrated Reasoning is testing you on a section that no longer exists.
  • Take Data Insights seriously. It is a full third of the exam and the section most people under-prepare, because it did not exist in this form before.
  • Practise the section order you intend to use, so exam day is not the first time you try it.
  • Rehearse the flag-and-return habit. Review & Edit only helps if you have practised leaving a question and coming back.

โœ… Quick action plan

  1. Check whether any shortlisted programme actually requires the GMAT โ€” for technical Master's, most do not.
  2. If one does, confirm on mba.com whether it wants a Focus Edition score.
  3. Register on mba.com in your exact passport name, and confirm the current fee there.
  4. Sit an official practice exam cold to establish your starting point.
  5. Prepare with Focus Edition material, weighting Data Insights, and sit one full timed mock before the real thing.
